DANGEROUS CHEMICALS ADDED INTO WARAGI HEADING TO RWANDA—KABALE LEADERS
BY VANANSIO KAKOGOSO
IN KABALE—-
The reports that illegal chemicals and substances are added in distilled waragi in Kahondo and Rugarama parishes in Maziba sub county
The locals claim that the distillers add sugar, fertilizers, Disel and
soap in local brew known as tonto before distilling to get waragi. The
locals also claim that after distilling waragi some distillers
contaminate it with sponer a veterinary drug for dairy to add flavor.
Elias Tumuheki one of the concerned residents from Nyanga village in
Kahondo parish Maziba Sub County says that this habit of adding
chemicals has put waragi consumers at risk. He says that most of the
distilled waragi is suspected to be sold in Rwanda and other nearby
districts that do not know how it is distilled.
Leopold Twesigye another resident of Kahondo parish wants health and
security officials to intervene and arrest the suspected distillers.
He says that they should also ban all the suspects from distilling
waragi until it’s proved that the waragi has not harm on human beings.
The Maziba sub county district councilor Labouday Ubaldo confirms
receiving reports of the chemicals added in tonto before distilling.
He says that all the chemicals used are procured in Kabale
municipality. He however says that they have confiscated a sample
pending tasting by experts to prove the chemicals used and culprits
will be apprehended and charged in courts of law.
The Maziba sub county chairman Dezi Biryomumeisho says that he has
arrested one of the suspected distillers of the said waragi. He
however says that they have launched a man hunt of anybody dealing in
such activities to face the law.
The Acting Kabale district Health officer Sr. Immaculate Mandela says
that she is not aware of the matter but she says that she is to deploy
surveillance team to investigate the matter.
Our efforts to get a comment from the Kabale district police commander
Dickens Bindeeba were futile as he was not picking his phone calls.
