Reports in Masindi indicate that new born babies are at high risk of contracting HIV from their mothers due to high dependency on Traditional Birth Attendants (TBAs).
This was revealed by Victo Alum, the Masindi District HIV focal person, who said that TBAs are still active in conducting deliveries especially in rural areas thus increasing positivity rates among newborn babies and the delivering mothers.
According to the Masindi district Biostatician, Geoffrey Baguma, only 55% women deliver in the hands of skilled health workers implying that about 45% go to TBAs.
Baguma said this recently while delivering the report on the findings of research carried out between October and December 2017 at the District health headquarters.
Buguma confirmed that many mothers visit health facilities for antenatal but end up delivering from the TBAs.
He therefore called upon the authorities to intervene and address this matter before the situation worsens.
Patrick Baguma, the district health inspector, also confirmed that the issue of TBAs in the district is alarming thus calling for increased sensitization programmes in the district.
