In Kampala—
Former presidential candidate Dr Kizza Besigye has said that the government planned to arrest him for the killing of Kyadondo East Member of Parliament Robert Kyagulanyi alias Bobi Wine in the aftermath of the August 2018 Arua by-election which ended in chaos.
The four times presidential candidate made the claim during a press conference at Katonga Road on Thursday.
He said that opposition leaders had got wind of a government plot to kill political opponents and pin the killings on the opposition.
Besigye claimed that the shooting of Bobi Wines driver Yasin Kawuma in Arua was actually an attempted assassination on the Kyadondo East legislator.
He added that the killing of Kawuma was part of a government plot to convince the public that members of the opposition were at loggerheads and taken to killing those they fear threaten their own popularity.
Besigye said the government plot is a reaction to President Yoweri Museveni realizing that his government had lost popular mandate after the 2016 general elections which he claimed belief that he was the rightful winner and his party the FDC has evidence to back this up.
However, the Uganda Peoples Defense Forces have dismissed the claims as baseless, saying that the the former presidential candidate was not being realistic.
The deputy army spokesman Lt Col Deo Akiiki said that He (Besigye) of all people should know that it has never been the system of the UPDF to assassinate political opponents,
This, he should know, is not the approach of the UPDF and government for that matter. If this was our approach, can you imagine the kind of situation we would be having in the country?
The Special Forces Command (SFC) which was partly involved in the Arua fracas also dismissed Besigyes claims.
The SFC Spokesman Capt. Jimmy Omara said if Besigye indeed had sources from the armed forces that gave him such information, he should name them.
