ELLY KARENZI
In Ibanda
The Ibanda district natural resource officer, Elly Kirya has confirmed that two government prison farms in the district have withdrawn from encroaching and planting food crops in the wetlands and swamps along the two rivers.
The two government prisons are Kiburara government prison farm and Nyabuhikye prison farm both situated in Ibanda district.
Mr. Kirya said the eviction was supported by the environment staff and the NEMA with the aim of protecting wetlands and swamps which have been degraded by both inmates and farmers who live long the rivers.
Mr. Kirya noted that a buffer zone measuring 30 meters was left as a yardstick between the Mpanga river and Nyabikurungu river as a demarcation to stop the inmates and citizens from using the areas because the soil drops into the water.
The Officer in charge of Kiburara government prison, Mr. Festo Nsambya and the Officer for Nyabuhikye government prison,Mr. Keneth Byekwaso both have confirmed that the convicts have been told to vacate the wetlands where they have been growing food crops they have depended on for several years.
