UTB LAUNCHES MOUNTANEERING COMPAIN
By Okoodi Abooki
Uganda Tourism board (UTB) has launched a campaign to promote Mountaineering as one of the tourism products in Uganda.
The move is intended to attract more domestic and international tourists so as to generate additional revenue for the sector.
Currently the tourism sector earns about Ugx1bn out of about ten thousand hikers who visit different mountains in the country every year.
The UTB chief executive officer (CEO) Lilly Ajarova is optimistic that the product will increase the number to thirty five thousand hikers so as to see more revenue spreading out to locals and the national parks as well.
During the campaign launch, a group of local and international visitors hiked Mount Muhabura, the third highest mountain in Uganda which stands at 4,127 meters above sea level and is substantially steeper than any other mountain in the range.
Unlike Elgon and Rwenzori mountains, Muhabura situated in Virunga Volcanic range in Kisoro district is considered the toughest by even seasoned hikers given that the entire ascent and descent is done in a day as Pasqa Lorna Abur, a member of the Mountaineers Club of Uganda explains.
The CEO noted that as a first time hiker Mount Muhabura was quite a stretch although she was so glad that she conquered it.
She said feel very satisfied, inspired and renewed as a person adding that the scenery and everything she saw along the way is something that she had never experienced before and it gives her more inspiration to visit more places that they intend to develop.
Lilly noted that to ascent that hike in one day and come back can be a very strange task even for professional hikers and proposed that as they develop the hiking and mountaineering in the country they will work together with wild life authority and make sure that they provide additional facilities in the park along the trail so that the hikers go up.
They have stop overs with better facilities where they can be able to refresh so that they can continue hiking with passion the next day.
Known as the “Pearl of Africa,” Uganda is located in East Africa and offers some of the continent’s most diverse wildlife viewing, dramatic landscapes, and immersive cultural experiences.
Uganda is home to more than half the world’s population of endangered mountain gorillas, and trekking to observe these gentle giants in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest which is one of the world’s top bucket list travel activities.
