In Ibanda

A total of 462 graduands have today been awarded with degrees, diplomas and certificates at Ibanda Univeristy in Ibanda municipality.

 The 3^rd graduation ceremony in which many graduated in different courses was presided over by the Chancellor Prof. Venansius Baryamureeba at the campus premises.  

The Vice Chancellor, Prof. Emmanuel Ahimbisibwe Karooro, while addressing the congregation, asked the graduands to value the skills of education they have attained from the university.

 He appealed to them to aim higher and to let any achievement they have got from the university go to another level.

He pointed out that Ibanda University is facing the problem of transport on the side of students as it has not got enough money to buy a school bus.

He told the Board of Directors, students and parents that when president Museveni visited Ibanda University in 2014, he promised the university a Bus, but up to the present time they have never got it.

The Chancellor prof. Baryamureeba noted that Ibanda district has over 70 PHD holders serving in different areas in the country urging graduands to apply for jobs in Ibanda and support their brothers.

In Entebbe  

Grade one magistrate’s court yesterday charged and remanded Police constable Davis Talemwa on two counts of murder of Joshua Nteyireho and Merina Tumukunde on the Entebbe–Kampala Expressway at the beginning of September.

Court led by her worship Joanita Muwanika heard that on September 15 Mr Talemwa and others still at large, near Nabirigwa Bridge on the Expressway in Katabi Town council unlawfully attacked and killed Nteyireho and Tumukunde.

Her worship Muwanika said Mr Talemwa was not required to take plea before the grade one magistrate’s court since murder is a capital offence that can only be heard before the high court.

She said the suspect will only appear before the grade one magistrate’s court to be informed of the progress of the investigation.

She also gave the prosecution six months to conclude investigations in the matter so as Talemwa is committed to the high court, or else the suspect will be entitled to apply for a mandatory bond that can be given by the grade one court.

Her worship remanded Talemwa to Kigo prison until November 18 this year when he will appear before the court for the prosecution to inform the court on the progress of the investigations.

In Kanungu

Kanungu district is grappling with high school dropout rate by learners which has brought down the education standards in the district.

For example pupils who registered for PLE 2018 were 4971 while those that sat for the exams were 4899 indicating that from the time of registration to exams time in November, 72 candidates had already dropped out of school across the whole district.

Relatively, this year 2019, the number might even be higher since the registered number of candidates was 4971, but those who sat for the mock exams were 4815 indicating that those who had dropped out were 156.

Speaking to the district education officer for Kanungu district Charles Sunday, he acknowledged the problem but attributed it to early pregnancies and early marriages which are initiated by the parents, guardians or care givers.

 He also attributed the school dropout of learners to failure by the parents /guardians to provide scholastic materials and other needs for their children citing midday meals.
