At least 85 SACCOs in Ntungamo District have been selected to benefit from the presidential initiatives on Wealth and Job creation dubbed “Emyooga initiative” programme.
This was revealed by the RDC Ntungamo George Bakunda while receiving and handing over certificates and Bi- laws to the District and Municipal community development officers in the district board room on Friday.
The program is meant to get Ugandans doing similar jobs to form savings groups, whose bank balances will be boosted by a grant from the government.
Through Emyooga, the government is to support 18 categories of associations, namely: Boda Bodas, women entrepreneurs, welders, taxi operators, fishermen, restaurant operators, mechanics, Journalists, youth leaders, PWDs, performing artists’ veterans, market vendors, saloon operators, produce dealers, tailors and elected leaders.
However 17 SACCOs are to benefit from each constituency since the journalists have not yet formed the SACCO.
The overarching goal of the initiative is to convert 68% of the country’s homesteads that are currently involved in subsistence production to market-oriented activities.
RDC Bakunda tasked the Microfinance Support Centre the implementing partner to train SACCO leaders in basic managerial skills especially on how they will operate.
He urged members of the Emyooga SACCO to own and increase the membership, shares and savings if the presidential initiative is to be realized.
In the five constituencies of Rushenyi, Kajara, Ruhaama main, Ntungamo Municipality and Ruhaama East, he noted that after training of SACCO leaders they will disburse UGX 2.8 billion to 85 SACCOs benefiting over 40,000 members.
Ntungamo district chairman Singahache Dennis asked the targeted beneficiaries to fulfill all the requirements, especially Bi- laws, so that they can get the government funds to boost their community enterprises.
