The minister state for Bunyoro Affairs Hon. Janipher Namuyangu Kacha has revealed that the Bunyoro Public University will commence in the next financial year.

She said that the government has already secured the money to commence the university.

”The commencement of Bunyoro Public University is in the next financial year, and government has already secured the money for the university.”

The minister challenged the parents and guardians to get prepared for the university since it will bring the services near to the people.

Harriet Businge the Woman member of parliament for Hoima district asserted that since the University is targeting all people, residents should get prepared to benefit from the development.

She also noted that though some people may not be able to directly benefit from the university, they can offer other services such as accommodation, transport and also others.

”The university may not benefit all people, but we can tap into the opportunity such as providing accommodation, restaurant, transport and others.”

Last year, The Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja told parliament that two Universities, Bunyoro University and Busoga University will be operating in the financial year 2022/2023.

The government has embarked on establishing public Universities across the country to accommodate the growing number of students in the country.

President Museveni accepted calls for the establishment of a University in Bunyoro in August, after another plea by the Omukama of Bunyoro Kitara Kingdom, Solomon Gafabusa Iguru.

This was just one of the many demands for public universities in the regions, as many leaders see it as an opportunity for the specific regions to develop.

Just on Wednesday, Members of Parliament from Busoga region led by their chairperson Stephen Kisa, the Luuka county MP also called for the establishment of a public university in Busoga. The current Busoga University is run as a private institution, affiliated with the Central Busoga Diocese of the Church of Uganda.

Last year Nabbanja said that the government is fast-tracking the process of establishing public universities across the country, and that a taskforce has been formed to foresee this. She said for the Bunyoro region, a stakeholders engagement has been done, and a taskforce has been set up to oversee the process.

If the two Universities are set up, it will bring the number of public Universities to 11. The move would also mean that President Museveni’s vision to have each of the original 18 districts of Uganda get a University is taking shape.

So far, the public Universities include; Mbarara University, Kabale University, Mountains of the Moon University, Gulu University, Lira University,  Muni University, Soroti University, Busitema University. Others are Makerere University and Kyambogo University.

There is Increasing concern about the academic qualifications of the recently appointed Resident District commissioners.

Article 203 of the Constitution and Section 70 of the Local Government Act (as amended in 2010) set A-level or its equivalent as the minimum academic requirement for one to be appointed as RDC, but many are said to have questionable academic papers.

Last month, two concerned citizens Nuwabiine Jossy and Twahika Denis have asked the Minister for Presidency, Milly Babalanda to avail them the academic documents of all the appointed RDCs.

In a letter dated 19th April 2022 through their lawyers of Arinaitwe Peter & Co. Advocates to the Minister for presidency, Nuwabiine and Twahika say they are passionate about the country’s good governance, rule of law and would also like to know the vetting process of the said appointments.

It is yet to be seen if the minister will avail the academic documents and what will be done to the newly appointed RDCs whose papers will be found lacking

Expert surgeons at Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital have successfully Carried out an operation to separate Siamese twins.

The 8-hour operation was carried out by Mbarara regional referral hospital doctors led by Dr.Twesigye Deus a senior surgeon at the facility.

The co-joined twins belonged to Rebecca Nkunda 20 years a Resident of Kakoba in Mbarara City.

Dr.Celestine Barigye the hospital Director Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital told reporters that Rebecca Nkunda delivered the twins at Ruharo Mission Hospital before she was later transferred to Mbarara regional referral hospital for the operation to separate the babies .

He adds that the twins were born at 33 weeks though normal term is at   40 weeks.

Dr. Barigye  says the operation was a success and it was the hardest compared to other similar operations Carried out in other facilities around the country.

The hospital Director further commended the work of the eight doctors who carried out this operation.

Dr.Deus Twesigye who headed the team of surgeons  says the twins had connected intestines, kidney ,and anus.

Harrison Kagure the hospital Public Relations Officer noted that the twins are currently receiving treatment at the hospital and they are all breathing well.

Kagure adds that this operation was the second in the history of the hospital

Rebbecca Nkunda the mother of the twins appreciated the efforts rendered by the hospital team in having her twins safe.

Dr.Felix Onangia a senior surgeon at the facility said they are now considering further corrective surgery on the twins

Uganda currently has no documented information   showing the Stastics of mother who   give birth to cojoined twins.

It’s estimated that on average of 50000 babies produced in Uganda every year 1 case of cojoined twins is registered.
