Police in Rukungiri district are currently investigating the tragic circumstances that led to the untimely demise of a primary school pupil during her journey back home in the evening.
The incident occurred in Omukashanda village, Ruyonza parish, Nyarushanje sub-county, Rukungiri district.
The young girl, identified as Owomuhendo Maria, aged 9 a pupil at St. Andrew’s Primary School in Nyarushanje also a resident of Omukishanda village, Ruyonza parish, Nyarushanje sub-county, Rukungiri district.
According to Elly Maate, the police spokesperson for the Kigezi Region, the unfortunate incident occurred on the 13th of October 2023, at approximately 5:00 PM. Maria was being transported, along with two other pupils, on a red Bajaj Boxer motorcycle with registration number UEB 887J, on their way home from school. Tragedy struck when the motorcycle attempted to overtake a Fuso Fighter motor vehicle with registration number UBJ 619J (a tipper).
During the overtaking maneuver, they encountered another motorcycle approaching from the opposite direction, resulting in a collision.
Maate revealed that the collision caused Maria to be thrown from the motorcycle, and she tragically lost her life instantly. Following the incident, police officers from Rubabo police post visited the scene of the accident.
The young girl’s body was subsequently transported to Kisiizi Hospital for a postmortem examination. Both involved motor vehicles were impounded at Rubabo police post, pending inspection by the Inspector of Vehicles (IOV). The individuals responsible for the collision are currently at large, but ongoing efforts are being made to apprehend them.
