In Kabale—
Police in Kabale yesterday afternoon arrested a 20 year old woman over alleged child desertion after birth.
The suspect is Anicent Natukunda of Buhekyena village Karujaga parish Rubaya Sub County, Kabale district, who allegedly on the 22/02/2021 at around 16:00 delivered a baby boy from a cassava garden and abandoned it there.
The Kigezi region police spokesperson Elly Matte told our reporter that Luckily enough, the child was recovered by Sanyu Asumpta aged 42 yrs, a resident of Ruhita village Kibuga parish Rubaya sub county .
Matte noted that the crying child was found wrapped in polythene and Assumpta put it in her cloth before rushing it to Katuna police post.
He added that the OC Katuna rushed it to Kamuganguzi health centre III for first aid by cutting the umbilical code, after which it was proceeded to Kabale police station and was taken to Rugarama hospital where it is being cared for.
Matte revealed that in the afternoon the local residents called the police informing them to have identified the person who delivered and abandoned the child and was hence arrested.
However, matte appealed to all women to always use protective measures during sex or report all men who neglect their children instead of dumping them in bushes.
Natukunda claimed that the person, who impregnated her, denied being the owner which prompted her to do so.
Child desertion case was registered at Katuna police station under file number CRR 04/2021.
