In Fort Portal city—-
Lecturers at Mountains of the Moon University and the governing Council have agreed to call off the one month industrial action that has been ongoing.
Retired Col. Tom Butime the Chairperson Governing Council said the staff had laid their tools over their salary arrears from August 2020 to March 2021 and the delay by government to take over MMU.
During a press conference held at Saaka Campus, Col. Butime said the staff arrears accumulated to 221bn shillings.
He attributed this to the COVID lockdown where students were not paying tuition and all businesses were closed.
Prof. John Kasenene the University Vice Chancellor told journalists that the industrial action greatly affected the functionality and service delivery at the university.
Baranga Peter the Chairperson Staff Association says the resolution to call off strike came after they received a commitment letter from the permanent secretary in ministry of education pledging to pay staff arrears once government fully takes over the institution.
