NYAKABIRIZI TRADERS, DIVISION OFFICIALS CLASH OVER POOR TAX COLLECTION, CORRUPTION

The residents of Ntungamo village, Nyakabirizi division, Ishaka-Bushenyi municipality are in hard fights with division officials over taxes charged by council town agents, clerk.
Residents claim that the division officials collect taxes but do not use them to provide services to the payers.
Angry residents noted during a meeting held at Ntungamo ward headquarters that town agents who collect taxes don’t give receipts, take bribes for building plans allowing people to build without plans.
Residents pointed out Ms. Donam a town agents and her colleague one Ms. Syson as some of the officials who poorly collect their taxes in addition to not giving them receipts.
According to Ikyiriza Mauda Kanzingo, the head of traders in Nyakabirizi, town agents collect revenues in rude and harsh ways.
She added that both big and small businesses are charged equal taxes and to make matter worse, the taxes are not put to proper use.
She cited out how the authorities have failed to use traders’ taxes to collect garbage that is disposed everywhere in the town, or construct reasonable pit latrines/ toilets.
Wilson Karuhanga the NRM chairman Nyakabirizi division ordered tax collectors to pay back all the money taken without issuing receipts.
He also warned the tax collectors against taking bribes from people, especially on building plans arguing that it will bounce back.
Doreen tushemereirwe, the revenue officer Nyakabirizi called upon people to make sure they get their assessments and always follow their money.
Town mayor, Mr. Evaristo Nista Byaruhanga apologized to people for all these wrong acts and promised handle all their complaints.
He criticized division officials for misleading people by taking their money, forging receipts, collecting revenue harshly and rudely but called for harmony among people.
