Two people, one a Rwandan and the other a Ugandan, were killed in a landslide on Monday night that destroyed a house as they slept inside in Rwamacumu, Kasheregyenyi Parish, Kamuganguzi Sub- County, Kabale District.
Kigezi Region police spokesperson, Elly Maate, identified the deceased as Tayebwa Charles, 18, a casual laborer and resident of Rwamacumu Cell in Kamuganguzi, and Bosco, approximately 17, a Rwandan national.
According to reports, at around 3:00 a.m. on October 29, 2024, a landslide carrying rocks hit the house of Agrey Rukundo in Rwamacumu village, destroying the structure and burying the two individuals as they slept. They were killed instantly.
The incident was reported to the police by Abraham Nuwagaba, the area chairperson, who informed the officer in charge at Kamuganguzi Police Post. The District Police Commander (DPC) for Kabale and the district Criminal Investigation Department (CID) officer led a team to the scene.
Maate told journalists that police processed and documented the scene, and efforts were made to retrieve the deceased from the rubble. After a postmortem, the bodies were handed over to their relatives for burial.
This tragedy is like a similar incident in May of last year, where at least ten people were killed following mudslides in Murore Sub- County and Bunagana Town Council in Kisoro District. Mudslides also claimed about eight more lives in Rukiga, Rubanda, and Kabale districts during that period.
