A 32-year-old businessman was shot and injured by a police officer during the LC1 chairperson elections in Ntungamo District on Tuesday, July 28, 2026.
The victim, identified as Bonde Obed, a resident of Nyakibigi Cell, Kahunga Ward in Western Division, Ntungamo Municipality, sustained a gunshot wound to his left leg during an altercation at a polling station in Mpaama Village, Kyamate Ward.
According to SP Samson Kasasira, the Rwizi Region Police Spokesperson, the incident occurred at about 11:00 a.m. after Obed allegedly refused police instructions to join other voters in the queue and instead remained seated near the polling station.
Kasasira said the police officer attempted to remove Obed from the area using a stick, but Obed allegedly became violent and grabbed the officer by the collar. The officer reportedly struck Obed’s hand with his elbow in an attempt to free himself before three other men, said to be Obed’s colleagues, surrounded him. The officer then fired a single shot, which struck Obed in the left leg.
Kasasira said the firearm used in the incident was recovered, the officer involved was arrested, and statements were recorded from election officials and other witnesses.
Police have since opened a general inquiry into the shooting, according to the police spokesperson.
