Police in Kanungu District are investigating the circumstances under which a 53-year-old man allegedly committed suicide by hanging in jackfruit tree, reportedly due to accumulated debts.
The deceased has been identified as Fredian Friday, 53, a resident of Kahama Cell, Kanyantorogo Sub-county, Kanungu District reported to have died on Friday, August 7, 2026.
According to a police statement, the deceased is believed to have been experiencing serious financial difficulties and accumulated debts, which are suspected to have contributed to the incident. Police say investigations are ongoing to establish the exact circumstances surrounding his death.
The Kigezi Regional Police spokesperson, SP Nelson Tumushime, confirmed the incident, saying that a team of detectives and Scene of Crime officers responded to the scene and found the deceased hanging from a jackfruit tree on Friday morning.
Tumushime urged members of the public to support people experiencing emotional distress by encouraging them to seek help from healthcare professionals, counselors, religious leaders, or trusted individuals. He also appealed to the public to avoid speculation and to respect the family’s privacy as investigations continue.
