In Ntungamo—-
Police in Ntungamo district are investigating a case of unlawful wounding against students of Kategaya Memorial Technical Institute who allegedly assaulted their principal over accusations of sexual harassment.
The incident occurred on October 13, 2026, at about 9pm at the institute in Karagwe Cell, Itojo Parish, Itojo Sub-county, when a group of students reportedly stormed the home of the principal, 58-year-old Benon Mujuni, found him in company of 17-year-old female student of the institution.
SP Samson Kasasira, the Rwizi Region Police spokesperson, said this prompted the students to accuse the principal of sexual harassment before ascending on him with sticks.
Kasasira said police were alerted by the area Government Intelligence and Security Officer (GISO), and officers from Itojo Police Station rushed to the scene to rescue the principal from the angry students.
Mujuni was rushed to Itojo Hospital for treatment, while police recovered sticks believed to have been used in the assault. A Police Form 3 (PF3) issued to the principal classified his injuries as grievous harm.
Police also opened a case of attempted defilement against the principal following the discovery of the underage student at his residence.
However, police investigations reportedly established that no sexual intercourse had taken place after the girl underwent a medical examination.
Police further alleged that the incident could have been a planned move involving some students and teachers who intended to blackmail the principal, although investigations into the circumstances surrounding the incident are ongoing.
Fourteen students were suspended for two weeks as investigations continued, while the two case files were forwarded to Ntungamo Central Police Station for further management.
Kasasira said police were continuing with investigations into both the alleged assault and the attempted defilement allegations to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident and determine the appropriate legal action
