In Masindi—-
Drama ensued at Masindi Town Mosque, Masindi district on Friday after the leadership of Masindi town Mosque blocked the district Khadi Sheik Yahaya Safian Mugisa from accessing the worship place.
On Friday the Muslims across country went to polls to elect their new leaders at their respective Mosques in elections that were organized by Uganda Muslim Supreme Council.
However, the leadership of Masindi town Mosque that claim not to be under Uganda Muslim Supreme Council did not participate in the elections that the district Sheik Mugisa had gone to preside over.
This forced the leadership of the Mosque led by their chairperson Sheik Yahaya Abdu -Nuru Sozi to close the Mosque’s main entrance gate in protest of the election and to block the district Khadi from conducting them.
At around 30 minutes past midday, Sheikh Mugisa and his team of over 50 Muslims got stranded at the mosque after finding a chain link erected around its gate which angered them.
This forced the Khadi and his team to hold the Juma prayers on Tanga Street along which the mosque is located from where they also elected the Mosque’s new leadership.
The positions included the mosque chairpersons, vice chairperson, secretary and treasurer plus three directly selected councilors including one for women and youth.
Police had deployed at the mosque in anticipation of chaos there.
Speaking after the elections, Sheikh Mugisa accused the leadership of the mosque led by the chairperson Sheik Yahaya Abdu Nuru-Sozi of conniving to sell-off the mosque’s property.
He said that the current leadership of the mosque is opposed to the elections because they want to remain in the leadership so that they can continue selling off the mosque’s property.
Sheik Yahaya Abdu Nuru-Sozi declined to comment on the matter when contacted.
This is not the first time Sheikh Mugisa has been involved in a conflict with the leadership of Masindi town mosque; Sometime back his shoes were cut at the mosque by unknown people while he attended the prayers in the mosque.
