ERRANT UPDF OFFICER SENTENCED TO SEVEN YEARS IN PRISON

The 2nd Division Court-martial sitting in Makenke Mbarara has today sentenced a 42 year old UPDF officer to 7 years in prison over manslaughter.
The court which was presided over by the 2nd Division Court martial chairman Col. Geoffrey Mujuni Rwamunyonyore sentenced Sgt. Juma Abubakari to seven years imprisonment for manslaughter of a fellow officer.
Court heard that on 28th November 2017 while at kidedeya range ground, Sgt. Abubakari with PK submachine gun shot and caused death of Private Nelson Kiiza whom they were together at the shooting range ground.
While reading the judgment, Col. Mujuni said that the convict pleaded guilty and the court convicted him on his own plea of guilty and the considered the prayers of both prosecution and the defense council’s mitigation factors and came up with a seven years term of sentence which he has a right to appeal to a higher court with 14 days.
