Police in Mbarara are holding 4 suspects over motor vehicle number plate theft shooting one in a heel.
According to Samson Kasasira, the Rwizi region police spokesperson, Nasasira Arnold was shot in the heel after he attempted to grab a steering wheel of the police vehicle as they approached Katete Bridge. The bridge crossing river Rwizi links Lugazi to Katete ward in Mbarara Municipality.
Kasasira claimed that Arnold wanted to swerve the vehicle into river Rwizi and probably escape adding that his action risked the life of police officers travelling in the same vehicle.
He justified the shooting and injuring of the suspect saying that as an institution they no longer want to put police officers at risk yet a lot of money is spent on them in training.
Arnold was arrested with other three suspects and one confessed having been writing short messages threatening the motor vehicles owners not to report the loss of their number plates to police.
Kasasira who displayed the mobile phone contacts which the suspects were instructing their victims to deposit money in order to return the number plates said that more than 500 different number plates have been stolen for the last six months within the region.
He thus called upon the victims to come out and support police in prosecuting these suspects.
