Residents of hospital cell in Kabale Municipality are worried over the increased cases of crimes which they blame to lack of street lights on the Kabale regional referral hospital road.
The residents claim that criminals take advantage of the darkness to attack and rob from innocent locals who move in the night and early morning hours going and coming from the hospital.
Annet Ampaire, who owns a kiosk in the front of Kabale regional referral hospital gate, says that her colleague last month narrowly survived being raped by a gang of thugs in the middle of the road when she was on her way from Kabale town.
The Chairperson of hospital cell Christopher Gakibayo says that last week, thugs broke into his home and took off with the batteries of his car. He says that he has registered over ten cases since January this year.
Emmanuel Sentaro Byamugisha, the Kabale Municipality mayor says that the municipality is aware of the challenge and adds that the authorities are planning to have the street lights on the hospital road in the financial year of 2019/2020.
He says that they are currently extending security lights from police to Butobere junction along the Kabale-Mbarara road, and from Katuna round to Mwanjari trading along the Kabale-katuna road.
Byamugisha however says that Municipal authorities are in touch with the police to ensure that the areas are watched over closely to avoid the loss of innocent lives.
