KABAROLE COUNCILOR WORRIED OVER POZZOLANA MINERS WORKING CONDITIONS

The Karambi sub county district councilor who also doubles as the secretary for production Kabarole district council Joseph Mashuhuko has expressed concern over poor conditions under which the pozzolana miners from Harugongo and Kichwamba sub counties are working.
According to Mashuhuko, the miners are working without preventive gears like boots, gloves, helpmates and reflector jackets, insurance policy among others.
Mashuhuko says that the district leaders of Kabarole pozolana miners, transporters and drivers association plus those of Hima cement agreed in a meeting not to allow miners start mining pozzolana without those necessities but to his surprise miners were found mining without any of them.
In April the Harugongo Pozzolana miners, transporters, drivers and Hiima Cement Factory signed a Memorandum of Understanding to harmonize their operations.
The conflict started in 2014 when an NGO in their report indicated that the Harugongo miners were employing children in mining and loading pozzolana, working without preventive gears, prompting Hiima to suspend buying the minerals from miners and brought in their own machine to do the mining and loading leaving the locals jobless.
