KIGEZI DIOCESE IN TROUBLE, RETIRED REVEREND GOES TO LABOUR COURT DEMANDS 25M
BY VANANSIO KAKOGOSO
IN KABALE—
Diocese of Kigezi has been issued a demand notice of 25.2million
shillings from Reverend Canon Richard Katarahweire as his pension and
gratuity and other costs.
In October 2016, Diocese of Kigezi was dragged to labor office for
allegedly denying a pension benefit to their former employee, Rev.
Canon Richard Katarahweire.
Through his lawyers M/S Twikirize and Company Advocates, Rev Can
Katarahwerire accuses Diocese of Kigezi for denying him a pension
benefit which is centrally to Section 12(2) of The Employment Act,
2006.
Katarikawe claims that he served the Diocese as a clergy from
1982-2011 before the diocese permitted him to serve in South Ankole
Diocese in order to prepare for his retirement. Katarikawe served in
South Ankole Diocese from 2011-2015.
Katarikawe claim that by the time he left Kigezi Diocese to serve in
South Ankole Diocese, he had attained 55 years which qualifies him to
get a pension in accordance with Article 13(15) (d) of the Diocesan
Constitution 1967(As Amended) 1997.
But to his dismay, Rev. Can. Katarikawe was recently told that the
Diocese council resolved not to give him a pension during the meeting
that was held on 29th of July 2011 because he didn’t qualify.
In the demand notice dated 30th June 2017, Kenneth Mutungi of M/S
Twikirize and Company Advocates says that the labour officer ordered
diocese of Kigezi to pay gratuity and pension to a tune of 18 million, his
savings of 1.2million shillings, 2 million for damages, and 4 million
shillings of his lawyers within 15 days.
Mutungi says that failure by the diocese to pay within fifteen days
since they received they will advance matter to court.
The Kigezi Diocesan Secretary Rev. Can. Obed Turihohabwe says that
says he has not received the demand notice and he is not aware of the
Judgment where Diocese of Kigezi lost a case to Rev. Can
Katarahwerire
