Mbarara city council councilors have threatened to impeach the city mayor Robert Mugabe Kakyebezi for failing to cause an extraordinary meeting in which councilors seek clarification from the outgoing city town clerk, Assy Abireebe Tumwesigire.
This follows a series of letters by city councilors that they say have been ignored and have not received any response from both the town clerk and Mayor.
The issues include; uncommitted money estimated to be 4.2 billion shillings, controversy about the arbitration between MBJ Consults and Mbarara City Council, clarification about the Bishop Stuart-Buremba road project and the status of unspent balances as at 1st July 2024, among others.
The workers representative councilor Jessica Mwijuka explained that the council is likely to lose a lot of money under circumstances unknown to them.
Byansi Muhammad, the councilor representing Nyamityoobora said they are now left with just an option of impeaching the city mayor for undermining them.
When contacted, the city council speaker, Bonny Tashobya Karusya asked the councilors to remain calm saying they have already scheduled a council meeting on Wednesday (January 22) where their issues will be answered.
Mbarara city mayor confirmed receiving the letter from the fuming councilors. He also said that he has directed the town clerk in writing to organize the extra ordinary council meeting which is in demand.
Kakyebezi however said there is no pertinent issue that will cause his impeachment.
