The Chairperson of Kigezi Inter religious council Rev. Fr. Gaetano Batanyenda has said that the Minister of Local Government Raphael Magyezi quit from the Igara West MP race because he had no other option.
Minister Magyezi who became popular when he sponsored the Private Member’s Bill that was passed to remove the presidential age limit in 2017, last week said he will not stand in 2021 but will consider coming again in the future. Magyezi said this appearing on a radio station in Bushenyi District.
Magyezi later denied media reports that he opted out after learning that Kasambya County MP Gafa Mbwatekamwa was shifting his political base to Igara County West, his birth place, to contest against Magyezi.
Speaking during a press conference at Kick Corruption out of Uganda offices in Kirigime ward Southern division Kabale municipality, Fr Batanyenda said that Magyezi is the primary reason to why Ugandans have not yet evidenced a peaceful transition of power from one President to the other as he tabled the motion that led to the scrapping off of the Presidential age limit cap.
Fr Batanyenda said that Magyezi must have withdrawn from the race possibly because he realised that many concerned Ugandans especially his electorates are still bitter with him for tabling the bill that removed the age limit.
Fr Batanyenda noted that the tabling of the age limit bill made Magyezi unpopular and therefore convincing his electorates for support in the forthcoming elections would be too challenging and costly to him thus his withdraw from the race.
