As Rukungiri teachers under their union UNATU yesterday joined the rest to celebrate World teacher’s day, they expressed their concern to the government to reduce the retirement age of teachers from 60 to
at least 55years of age.
According to the chair person UNATU Rukungiri Municipality, Nuwabaine
Joseph Gahwire if government reduces the retirement age of
teachers , it will create employment for the massive unemployed young
men and women that graduate from teachers training institutions and
enables the retiring officers to retire when they are a bit strong to
forge way forward with the remaining years which would not be easy for
them with difficulties such as diabetes, cancer, hypertension among
others diseases associated with old age.
He adds that like the bible says that to go through such old age is
suffering many challenges of old age.
The RDC Rukungiri Mr. Martin Mugabi who was the chief guest cautioned
them to avoid multiple borrowing which has caused persistent poverty
to most teachers even after retirement.
The RDC further asked them to work hard and prepare for their
retirement when it is still early through team work and solidarity.
The Rukungiri district speaker Mr. Turyamubona James in his remarks
asked teachers to be ambitious when they retire at 55years they will get a chance to join politics and become important and responsible citizens.
Rukungiri district has a total of 1695 teachers of which 326 teachers
are for secondary and 55 for institutions.
