NBS’ HUNTED SOLOMON SSERWANJA REPORTS TO POLICE

NBS TV journalist Solomon Serwanjja on has today Friday afternoon handed himself in to the police to be questioned on allegations that he and his colleagues illegally stocked government drugs.
Serwanja has been in hiding since Wednesday night when police stormed his house and recovered boxes of government drugs.
His wife, Mrs Vivian Serwanjja, was arrested along with three BBC journalists and their driver.
All five have since been released on Police bond.
The group had been working on an investigative story to uncover the illegal sale of government drugs.
According to government spokesperson Mr Ofwono Opondo who spoke to Serwanjja, the latter, was yesterday afraid that the police would manhandle him if he turned himself in.
Serwanja arrived at around midday today at the Kampala Central Police station, to record a statement.
He was accompanied by his lawyer as well as Joyce Bagala, the NBS station news manager.
Meanwhile the Ministry of Health has opened up for the first time on the matter, pledging support to the journalists involved in exposing the corruption in the health sector.
Emmanuel Ainebyoma, the ministry spokesperson said that the ministry was shocked and concerned that there are still drug theft rackets operating in the country.
As a ministry, we support any endeavor that is aimed at helping government to expose individuals involved in stealing government medicine and other commodities.
