The executive director of Presidential Initiative on Banana Industrial Development PIBID Rev. Prof. Florence Muranga revealed that the institution has not received government funds for the last two quarters 2018/19 budget.
She noted that institution is going through hardships without money to pay staff, and run the business of Tooke among others.
She said this on Friday evening 26thOct.2018 after a two day meeting with the Members of Parliament on committee of Science Technology and Innovations at the banana factory in Nyaruzinga Bushenyi district.
Prof. Muranga noted that because of the crisis, government has released emergency funds of 4.5 billion to cool the situation.
She however said that this is a drop in the ocean because they have a lot of debts from service providers of the organization.
She added that they are in final stages to be turned into a government company in the next five years.
On the other hand the minister of science technology and innovations Dr. Elioda Tumwesigye expressed dissatisfaction over MPs decision to abolish research and innovation fund which was very helpful in the ministry.
The committee chairman science, technology and innovation hon. Bwino Fred Kyakulaga said that PIBID did not receive funds from the government for the last two quarters because it was in the process of registering as a government company from the previous presidential initiative.
The area MP Arinda Gordon said that PIBID has been turned into a sleeping giant therefore it should be made active by all stakeholders.
