Anti riot police in Kabale district is heavily deployed at Kigezi high school following a violent strike of students last night.
The angry students who went on rampage last night at around 11;00pm, burnt down the prefect’s dormitory known as white house and also all house properties belonging to Deputy Head teacher; Edison Bakiga.
The students were protesting the harassment, beatings by Deputy Head teacher Edison Bakiga and suspension of their colleagues.
They accuse the head teacher; Steven Mugume for suspending two students (a boy and a girl) from senior six, on allegations of fornication.
The head teacher suspended a female senior six student after she was found pregnant.
The students complain that that they have been paying a fee of 50,000 shillings since 2013, towards buying a school bus that has not been bought.
They also accuse the prefects of conniving with school administrators not to work on their grievances and also not participating in strike which forced them to burn their dormitory.
The Kigezi region police spokesperson; Elly Maate confirms that the suspension of students and harassment by the deputy head teacher is the main cause of the strike.
He however, says police investigations to have strike organizers apprehended are ongoing and thereafter the culprits shall face charges of arson and malicious damage.
He also asked school heads to always solve matters of students amicably to avoid unnecessary strike.
