RUKUNGIRI PRIEST ATTACKER JAILED FOR 8 YEARS

The high court sitting in Rukungiri in the underway session presided
over by the high court judge justice Moses Kazibwe Kawumi
yesterday sentenced a 28 year old man on his own guilty to
six years and 8 months in government prison after he pleaded guilty to
aggravated robbery charges.
The convict was identified as Lawrence Turyahebwa; a resident of
Nyakanyinya, Ruhinda Sub County in Rukungiri district.
The prosecution led by the Rukungiri resident state attorney Muhereza told court that on the night of 16th Nov 2011, Turyahebwa while at Nyakanyinya Catholic Church attacked Barnard Bebwa; a priest at the same Church with a knife and stabbed him on the back before he took off with one hundred twenty five thousand shillings. Resident state attorney further told court that the priest was later
rescued by the residents after who took him to Nyakibale hospital where he was admitted.
Appearing in court, Turyahebwa pledged guilty to the charges read to him.
Justice Moses Kazibwe Kawumi while giving his judgment said “I
convict you on your own guilty to 10 years but you will serve 6 years
and 8 month in prison considering the 3years and four months you have
spent on remand.
Justice Kazibwe added that it was good for the accused to plead guilty as it saved him from serving many years in
