SHEEMA: OVER 400 FAMILIES LOSE BANANA PLANTATIONS, FORESTS OVER WETLAND ENCROACHMENT
By Stuart Tugume
In Sheema—
The National Environment management Authority (NEMA) has cut down a number of Banana plantations and forests whose owners encroached on wetlands.
The incident happened after NEMA warned people to stay away from wetlands but they decided to give a deaf ear to authorities and instead cultivated on wetlands forcefully.
Musime Serwano the Sheema Municipal Environment Officer told www.mknewslink.com that the president tasked NEMA with sensitizing the public of the effects of wetland encroachment since 2007.
He noted that however the public has refused to heed to pleadings from the authority which forced them to use a system of cutting down trees and plantations to send out a very big message to the rest.
The effected parts include Sheema Central, Kashozi division, Shuuku Town council and Rugarama Sub County.
