UCAA LAUNCHES TWO-DAY WORKSHOP TO EXPLORE SUSTAINABLE AVATION FUEL -SAF

The Uganda Civil Aviation Authority (UCAA) on April 22 2025 officially kicked off a two-day workshop in a feasibility study aimed at exploring Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), a cleaner and more environment friendly fuel alternative for aircraft at the Entebbe-based UCAA Headquarters.
Mr. Fred Bamwesigye, the Director General of UCAA, noted that Uganda made a choice to be part of the International Civil Aviation Organization’s (ICAO), initiative on Capacity Building for Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF) programme to support the ICAO standards, policies and strategies set to limit and mitigate the impact of aviation carbon emissions on the global climate and environmental protection.
The workshop was attended among others by top ICAO experts including Mr. Mohamed Rahma and Mr. Cesar Velarde and Ms. Chinga Mazhetese.

Bawesigye also called upon stakeholders to actively engage with the ICAO experts during the workshop and contribute data to help assess Uganda’s potential in SAF production.
The feasibility study aligns with the ICAO’s goal of achieving net-zero carbon emissions in aviation by 2050, and a short-term target of cutting emissions by 5% through cleaner fuels by 2030.
Mr. Bamwesigye emphasized that UCAA is committed to support the initiative progress.
“Our National Focal Point on aviation environment protection will also be available to you and should be able to coordinate all interactions between the Experts and the key stakeholders. UCAA is committed to support this process and we are looking forward to progressing this initiative to its completion,” said Bamwesigye.
