The director world food program in Uganda Khidir Daloum has challenged leaders and other stake holders in the country to join hands in the fight against hunger and malnutrition.
The director said, fighting hunger in Uganda is very possible because the country has better natural resources compared to other countries.
Speaking during a one day discussions at Mbarara University of Science and Technology, the director noted that if the mission to fight hunger cant be achieved in Uganda, then it wont be possible elsewhere.
The discussions mainly focused on the root cause of malnutrition and stunting, unlocking the potential of small holder farmers and creating assets to shield communities from food insecurity as well as strengthening social protection and emergency response capacity.
Khidir said that once food production is increased, Uganda will have capacity of feeding more than 200 million people out of the 261 million suffering from hunger in Africa.
Khidir Daloum wondered why the country with such potential still face challenges of high stunted rates among children and it has been able to register some development in other areas.
The minister for local government said that the concerns raised by world food program country director have already been discussed by the central executive committee of NRM party and that it will also be discussed next week during a retreat at national leadership institute Kyankwazi so that the food production can be emphasized at a parish level.
