Uganda has deployed Uganda Peoples Defense Force (UPDF) soldiers along the Uganda- Rwanda border as preventive measure against the wild spread of the corona virus pandemic that has scared the world.
The soldiers were deployed after the influx of Rwandans entering Uganda through porous border points increased recently.
The Rwandans were allegedly escaping to Uganda after their country confirmed cases of the deadly COVID-19. Rwanda has confirmed 40 cases of the corona virus.
Darius Nandinda, the Kabale Resident District Commissioner (RDC) revealed the matter on Wednesday afternoon while addressing the Kabale corona virus task force team, that was structured to oversee preventive measures against the possible spread of the corona virus in the country.
Nandinda said soldiers had been deployed, replacing police officer that had earlier been deployed there since the outbreak of the corona virus.
According to Nandinda, local council Chairpersons whose villages neighbor Rwanda frequently reported of the influx of Rwandans to Uganda after their country confirmed the pandemic.
“Rwandans had been entering Uganda through Kafunjo and Butanda but UPDF has been deployed there†Nandinda was quoted.
He further reveled that as a preventive measure, Uganda will not allow anymore Rwandans to cross to Uganda, to avoid the possible spread of the corona virus since Rwanda has already reported the cases.
“Rwandans living here will stay here and use our services, and Ugandans in Rwanda will remain there until the pandemic is beaten down. No more movements’ Nandinda was quoted.
Rwanda closed her borders with Uganda over a year accusing Kampala of harboring her enemies. Kigali later barred her citizens against crossing into Uganda and deployed soldiers along the borders to encounter those who dared to cross. Many were arrested, others were shot to death.
It’s not understood whether Rwanda has permitted her citizens to cross or escape the pandemic to a foreign country.
Patrick Besigye Keihwa, the Kabale District Chairperson speaking to our reporter said presidential orders; they have deployed the army to stop the influx of Rwandans into Uganda.
More than 18,000 people globally have died from COVID-19, while more than 420,000 infections have been confirmed in at least 170 countries and territories. Nearly 109,000 people have recovered from the corona virus.
Uganda has so far confirmed 14 cases.
