President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has called on schools and higher institutions of learning across the country to take it upon themselves in guiding students to take up and study courses relevant to the current job market.
The president says this is the only way which will save fresh graduands from languishing with their very good qualifications but looking for what to do in vain.
In a speech read for him by prime minister Robinah Nabbanja who represented the president at the 5th graduation ceremony of Valley University of Science and Technology in Bushenyi, Museveni explained: “I appeal to schools and universities to guide students to choose courses that are relevant to the job market.”
The president also commended the university for listening to his science message. “I wish to commend this university for taking my message because the majority of the courses you are offering here are science,” the president said in the speech.
At the graduation ceremony, Prime minister Nabbanja delivered a sum of UGX30m to the university which she said was sent to the university by the president and added another UGX10m which she said was direct from her office. Nabbanja said all the money was a contribution to the function.
A total of 857 students were awarded with diplomas, bachelors’ degrees and postgraduate diplomas in different disciplines. Out of this, females numbered 472 while 385 were males.
In his address to the congregation at the graduation ceremony of the 9-year-old institution, the university vice chancellor Dr. E.K. Rwasheema revealed that the institution was pleased to share significant milestones and achievements that highlight its growth and progress.
Dr. Rwasheema outlined charter application for the campus and national council for higher education (NCHE) inspection as one of the milestones. The others are development and accreditation of their academic programs, recruitment of staff and infrastructure development, partnerships and holding annual graduation ceremonies.
