Kabale District police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of a woman who allegedly committed suicide while on holiday with her boyfriend at Lake Bunyonyi.
The deceased has been identified as Mirembe Hindu aged 27, and resident of Kashaka Nuabugando Village in Bubaare Sub-County, Mbarara District.
According to reports, Mirembe and her boyfriend, Robert Hausvih, left Kampala on December 9, 2024, for one of the islands at Lake Bunyonyi, located in Bufuka Village, Mwendo Parish, Kitumba Sub-County. The couple had traveled to the area to enjoy a change of environment.
Kigezi Regional Police Spokesperson, ASP Elly Maate, told journalists on Sunday that on the night of February 1, 2025, while the couple and others were watching a Liverpool football match, Mirembe decided to go for a swim in the lake. She initially emerged from the water but later dived in again and did not resurface.
Realizing she had not returned, her boyfriend and friends jumped into the water, retrieved her, and attempted to administer first aid. However, she remained unresponsive. They quickly arranged transportation and rushed her to Rugarama Hospital in Kabale Municipality, where she was pronounced dead on arrival.
Maate confirmed that the case was reported to Kabale Central Police Station on February 2, 2025. Officers visited the scene, examined and documented the incident, and conducted a postmortem examination at Rugarama Hospital Mortuary. The body was later handed over to the family and taken to Mbarara for burial.
Police investigations into the incident are ongoing.
