Recreation for Development and Peace (RDP) Uganda, a nongovernmental organization, has today 9th May, 2019 donated 8 bags of cement towards the construction of a placenta pit at Kikingura health centre II in Bwijanga Sub County Masindi district.
RDPs intervention follows reports from Community Based Monitors and the health workers who have been complaining over lack of a placenta pit at the facility which is paralyzing their work to conduct deliveries which they say is not only inconveniencing pregnant mothers but also killing their career as midwives.
According to the health workers, one resident volunteered and sunk a placenta pit last year but it had never been used due to absence of its cover which forces the facility management to give the placentas to the women who deliver at that health centre facility hence advise them to take and bury them in their homes.
RDP Uganda with their funder Uganda Debt Network gave 8 bags of cement to the Health centre management when they had gone to the facility to monitor health service delivery.
According to Simon Muhangi, the project Coordinator of Strengthening Citizens Organization Participation and engagement (SCOPE), they decided to intervene following the public outcry on the situation the midwives and pregnant mothers are going through at the facility.
The 8 bags of cement is an addition to the 1 million Ugandan shillings which was contributed in pledges and cash by the residents last week during the community dialogue which was organized by RDP at the health facility.
During the same dialogue the sub county chairperson Olivia Mugisa acknowledged the problem and blamed the delay to construct the cover for the placenta pit due to failure to appoint the members of the health unit management committee in time.
The same health workers are also in fear of working in a dilapidated facility that is putting their patients lives at a risk of being hit by the facility that is at the verge of collapsing.
According to the facility in-charge, JoviaTalemwe, the wall of the facility which was constructed by the community in 1985 has developed multiple cracks creating fear that it will collapse anytime.
