Reporters covering the weekly FDC Press Conference, engaged in a fist fight this morning with a group of youths from the opposition party.
Violence erupted at the party offices in Najjanankumbi as the FDC youths took on the angry reporters who were protesting delays.
Trouble started when an FDC official came in and announced that today’s press briefing had been cancelled because the party spokesman, Ibrahim Semujju Nganda was holed up in a party meeting.
This annoyed some of the reporters who had waited since morning for the presser.
In protest, some journalists decided to remain in the conference room.
This did not augur well with some of the youthful party members who opted to lock them inside the room.
What followed was a physical fight that lasted about twenty minutes.
Sensing danger, party administrators led by Namyanzi Pauline, the acting chief of administration quickly reconvened the meeting and pleaded for forgiveness.
“We are asking for your forgiveness over our member who was trying to lock you inside which was not good. We are also sorry that we have not been able to hold a press conference as the speakers who were supposed to address you are absent which will not happen again”, Namyanzi apologized.
Following this tension, journalists who were in company of the Uganda Journalists Association spokesperson Ronald Kabuye demanded for public apologies from top party members if they are to cover the event ever again.
“I think we need to put a stop to this. This has gone beyond; I think it is high time we stop covering these guys. We dont know their aim. They invite us to give them coverage, at the end of the day they disappoint us. We demand a public apology from their party spokesperson and their party president,” Ronald Kabuye said.
The reporters have since given the party one day to come up with a public statement for this relationship to return to normal.
