Following numerous concerns raised in the road project for the construction of a 78.5 km tarmac rukungiri-ishasha-kihihi-kanungu road, the first project management committee was yesterday convened to find lasting solutions to the challenges.
The meeting took place yesterday at the project camp site in kihihi town council and was attended by kanungu district leaders, a team from UNRA and the contractor CHICCO.
The RDC kanungu hajji
shafiq sekandi sengooba while speaking to our
reporter revealed that the meeting was mainly called to find solutions
to the challenges that have been met in the first phase of the
implementation of the project especially regarding workforce,
compensation and relations between all parties.
The kinkizi west legislator who chaired the meeting said this was not
intended for blame game but rather settle issues amicably especially
the issue of compensation saying some project affected persons have
not been compensated yet the road works have already reached their
land.
He was however optimistic that after the meeting, all the challenges that have existed will be resolved and road works continue.
He also asked the contractor CHICCO and UNRA to revise their communication channels especially with the project affected persons.
Isaac Akampa from UNRA in charge of compensation along the
rukungiri-ishasha-kihihi-kanungu road revealed that most people have
been compensated and even those not yet will receive their money in this coming financial year.
He also revealed in areas where the road width was expanded into people’s land after compensation, they will be valued and compensated again soonest.
He thus called for good relations between the project affected persons and the contractor in executing this road project.
