The appalling state of Kakyeka stadium in Mbarara city has irked leaders and football fraternity. Kakyeka stadium is the major sports facility in the region.
The facility lacks a perimeter wall, which puts it at a stake of being encroached on.The stadium has also become a home to several criminals.
According to Paul Mucureezi who plays football in the stadium ,most of the facilities in the stadium are going to waste.
www.mknewslink.com Reporter visited the scene and found out that the facility is fenced with a make-shift of iron sheets. Our reporter saw the grass in the stadium drying away.
Joseline Baata Kamateneti ,the woman member of Parliament Ntungamo district, admits the stadium is appalling.
According to Kamateneti, members of Parliament from this region have intensified talks with the government to ensure that the status of the stadium is uplifted.
It’s worth noting that ,in February this year, President Museveni while officiating at the 42nd Tarehe sita celebrations in Kakyeka stadium in Mbarara city okayed the Uganda People’s Defence Force (UPDF)and the National Housing and Construction Company (NHCC) to construct a one kilometer perimeter wall around the stadium.
The commitment came when the development plan that was designed in 2017 by Mbarara District to renovate the current dilapidated stadium was shelved due to a lack of funds.
Last year, the Mbarara District council resolved to tender out Kakyeka stadium to a private investor to boost its local revenue.
Constructed in 1984 the Kakyeka stadium is home to Mbarara City Football Club located in Mbarara City North Division, Kamukuzi ward and has a capacity of 10,000 people.
