Mbarara District police have arrested two suspects on charges of torturing an 11-year-old girl, Patricia Ainembabazi, who sustained severe burns allegedly inflicted by her stepmother, Marion Atuhaire. The incident reportedly occurred on September 29, 2024, after Atuhaire accused Ainembabazi of eating a loaf of bread without permission.
Gloria Ngabirano, the head teacher of Rwamukondo Primary School, where Ainembabazi is a Primary Two student, revealed that the girl has not returned to school since the incident. The victim is now under the care of her biological mother.
Ainembabazi is the daughter of Patrick Ashaba and had been living with her stepmother, Atuhaire, in Rwamukondo Cell, Rubindi Town Council, Mbarara District.
ASP Amos Bentungura, the officer in charge of Rubindi Police Station, confirmed that both Atuhaire, 31, and Ashaba, 40, have been arrested and will face charges of aggravated torture. He noted that Atuhaire had been evading capture and was found hiding in Sheema District before being apprehended.
