Hundreds of students at Nyakabanga Vocational Secondary School in Bushenyi district are counting losses following a devastating fire that swept through their dormitory early Monday morning, reducing their belongings to ashes.
The fire, which broke out unexpectedly, destroyed students’ personal items including beds, mattresses, clothing, metallic cases, and books, leaving extensive damage to the dormitory’s roof.
According to the school headteacher,Bonney Barinyenka efforts by students, staff, and nearby residents to control the blaze using small fire extinguishers and water proved unsuccessful.
The OC Station, Kyabugimbi police station,AIP Monday Edward, confirmed that no injuries were reported. However, he noted that the Bushenyi District’s fire truck has been out of service for two months, hampering response efforts. The cause of the fire remains unknown, and investigations are ongoing.
