Police in sheema district has opened a general inquiry file to investigate circumstances under which a suspect was found dead in Police custody.
Kenneth Nuwajuna 44 a resident of Rugazi cell Masheruka sub county in sheema district died on Tuesday,7th, August,2025 at 7 am in Masheruka Police station in sheema district where he was detained.
According to SP Apollo Tayebwa, the Greater Bushenyi Police spokesperson, Nuwajuna was brought to the station at around 10:00 p.m. on Monday by Mugisha Elias, who claimed to have found him inside his goat pen. Mugisha allegedly raised an alarm, attracting his brother, Nicholas Kanzara, who helped arrest the suspect.
The two tied Nuwajuna’s arms with a rope and handed him over to police, where he was charged with criminal trespass.
Tayebwa said police later noticed that Nuwajuna was in poor health.
This prompted an intelligence-led operation that resulted in the arrest of those who had apprehended him, after they confessed to assaulting him on the way to the station.
On the morning of August 7, at about 9:00 a.m., other suspects in custody alerted officers that Nuwajuna was unconscious. When police checked, they found him dead.
The scene was visited by the magistrate (coroner) and a team of detectives led by the Sheema District Police Commander. The body was taken to Kabwohe Health Centre IV mortuary for a postmortem examination as investigations continue.
