Newly elected Kabarole District councilors are demanding more induction training to equip them with the knowledge and skills needed to effectively serve their electorates.
The councilors made the demand during their first council sitting held at Kitumba District Headquarters in Central Division, Fort Portal Tourism City, saying the five-hour induction they received was not enough, especially with the budgeting process drawing closer.
Murungi Musobozi Noble, councilor representing Rutete Sub-county, says most new councilors need training to understand their roles and responsibilities.
Rwiragira Frank Mugurusi, councilor representing persons with disabilities, says the five-hour training was insufficient.
Marunga Beatrice, councilor representing Kiko Town Council, says it is her first time on the district council and more training is needed.
Julius Byamukama, councilor representing Kabende Sub-county, says lack of knowledge about budgeting could affect service delivery.
Grace Ahumuza, councilor representing Busoro Town Council, wants government to provide experienced trainers to equip councilors with the necessary skills.
Kabarole District Chairperson Kimome Reben welcomed the proposal, pledging to work with district legislators and write to the Ministry of Local Government to fund the trainings.
The Chief Administrative Officer, Rubaihayo Stephen, also pledged to work with the chairperson to organize the training. He said he has instructed sub-county and town council chiefs to recover official stamps from outgoing LC1 chairpersons who have refused to hand them over, until the new leaders are trained on their use.
The council was presided over by District Speaker Mugabe Robinson.
