Kabundaire farmers market vendors in central division, Fort portal tourism city have demonstrated over the delayed reconstruction of their market after they were abruptly relocated to a wetland that floods whenever it rains.
Yesterday 14th August 2026, the vendors carried scarves and poles, intending to construct their own stalls after their previous structures were destroyed by the city council, with claims that it wanted to reorganize and rebuild the market to provide vendors with a favorable working environment.
The vendors say they have been patiently waiting for the promised works to begin, but no action has been taken.
At the area where they were relocated, vendors say customers avoid the market whenever it rains because the road becomes impassable. They also complain of a lack of latrines.
Police, city leaders and authorities intervened to calm the situation before it could worsen.
Speaking to the vendors, Fort Portal Tourism City Mayor Rev. Willy Kintu Muhanga urged them to remain calm and disregard false information circulating that the market had been tendered to a private investor who would construct it and later sell stalls to vendors.
The mayor clarified that the city council is responsible for reconstructing the market and that, once completed, every vendor will receive a stall free of charge.
He asked the vendors to be patient, saying the market will be completed within two weeks.
The mayor also explained that the abrupt relocation followed a directive from the Local Government Minister, who ordered the city to clear the garbage mountain that was rotting in the market during the national cleaning.
