Newly sworn in Local Council One and Two leaders in Fort Portal Tourism City’s North Division have decried the Shs10, 000 monthly government appreciation, saying it is too little compared to the work they do in their communities.
Hadijah Amanyire, LCI Chairperson of Kidukuru Cell, said local council leaders receive little financial support from government despite their role in serving communities.
The leaders complain that they have repeatedly asked their leaders to present their concerns to the President but all their efforts have been to no avail.
Nevertheless, Judith Balinda, LCII Chairperson of Gweri Ward, said the Shs10,000 allowance is too little, but they remain committed to serving their communities and pledged to work closely with division authorities to improve service delivery to residents.
Fort Portal Tourism City Resident City Commissioner Nasike Asumin warned LC1 and LC2 chairpersons against involving themselves in land disputes, urging them to refer such cases to higher authorities.
She described their work as a sacrifice and urged them to appreciate whatever support government provides.
Fort Portal Tourism City Mayor Rev. Willy Kintu Muhanga said the failure by people of Tooro to speak out about issues affecting them has contributed to the region lagging behind in development.
North Division Mayor Kiiza Joseph Mashuhukho said LC1 leaders need to be careful with their official stamps and revealed that division leaders have agreed to provide them with induction training.
The LC1 and LCII leaders in North Division were sworn in yesterday at the division headquarters in Karambi, North Division, Fort Portal Tourism City.
