Police in Kisoro District are investigating two separate suspected suicide cases by hanging involving two men aged 33 and 80 years.
The deceased have been identified as Mbonyebyombi Brian, 33, a resident of Chahi Village in Northern Division, Kisoro Municipality and an 80-year-old man identified as Ndagijimana Andrew, a resident of Mataramba Village, Gisozi Parish, Muramba Sub-county in Kisoro District,.
According to police, on September 6th at about 10:00 a.m., Mbonyebyombi reportedly returned home while drunk and asked his wife to serve him food. After some time, his wife went to their bedroom, where she found him hanging on a rope.
Police say the deceased is believed to have attempted suicide several times, particularly after consuming excessive amounts of alcohol.
In a separate incident, Police say on September 5th at about 7:00 a.m., Ndagijimana’s wife, Nyirayanze Tereza, left home and crossed into the Democratic Republic of Congo to cultivate her land.
When she returned at about 7:00 p.m., she found the door locked from inside. She called neighbours, who broke the door and discovered the body of Ndagijimana hanging on a rope.
Kigezi Region Police spokesperson SP Nelson Tumushime has urged members of the public experiencing stress, depression, financial difficulties or other challenges to seek help from professional counsellors, religious leaders, trusted friends and other support networks.
Police have also condemned the act of taking one’s own life and called on communities to support people who may be going through difficult circumstances.
