In Kampala—
The Inspector General of Police Okoth Martins Ochola has strongly warned police officers against torturing suspects.
Ochola made the remarks while passing out police CID detectives at Kabalye police training school in Masindi district.
He said that the police force has a big task of reviving its dented image in the public eye hence calling up officers to work hard towards achieving the goal.
“I want you to wake up from slumber and we renew the force,” he said
Ochola warned his men against violating rights of suspects while in police custody saying it grossly affects the police image.
“We are not going to tolerate officers who abuse rights of suspects,” he told officers.
He added that he’s working hard to eradicate torture and that any officers implicated will be charged in criminal court.
The warning by the IGP follows emergence of images depicting torture of Mityana Member of Parliament Zaake.
It was alleged that Zaake and Bobi Wine were tortured by security operatives when they were arrested from Arua on Monday.
The police boss revealed that when the president appointed him, he tasked him to rebuild the police image starting with CID and crime intelligence noting that he has already embarked on strengthening the CID which he promised to equip with well-trained officers as well as operational resources.
He passed out 305 CID officers and scene of crime officers who have been undergoing an induction course in criminal investigation for the past two months.
