In Uganda; At 82 years of age, many people look too old and weak. But President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni is different. Despite his heavy duty as President, busy schedules, long meetings, and constant travels abroad for economic programs and Pan-African missions, Mzee still looks energetic, fit and youthful.
So what is the secret behind his strength? My fellow youth the answer is simple, discipline and indigenous African Food.
President Museveni has for many years been a champion of eating our own local foods. He has often said:
“I don’t eat rice because I am not an Indian. I don’t eat bread because I am not a European. I am indigenous. I eat Matooke, Kalo (Millet), Muhogo (Cassava)”.
According to the President, his diet helped him shed over 30kg thats from 106kg down to 76kg – and regain his fitness.
In the Morning, President Museveni takes a small portion of cassava, matooke, millet bread (Kalo), cowpeas and groundnuts (G-nuts), plus local vegetables.
At lunch time, he does not eat. He only drinks water and black coffee without sugar. He says sugar is very bad for health.
During evening at around, President Museveni eats two small Irish potatoes which have low starch and a lot of indigenous vegetables to “deceive the stomach.”.

President Museveni does not take pork, chicken or mutton but he prefers little beef at times
Museveni says millet is the richest food on earth because it has protein, carbohydrates and iron all in one. Cassava and Irish potatoes give him natural energy without adding fat.
While others are importing foreign eating habits, our President is eating African and staying strong. His father lived up to 96 years and his mother up to 84 years, showing that longevity is in the family plus good lifestyle.
At 82, Museveni says his next 18 years will be devoted to African Integration with all the pressure of leading Uganda and Africa, President Museveni proves that food is the number one medicine.
