Kanungu Deputy Resident District Commissioner Gad Ahimbisibwe Rugaju has suspended sand mining activities in the district until Standard mining measures are put in place.
The suspension follows death of two sand miners in Kiruruma and Katete both in Kanungu district.
A S.2 student was buried alive at Kanyamisinga sand quarry in Katete Sub County. Two weeks later on Good Friday, another person died at Kiruruma sand quarry in Nyakinoni Sub County, Kanungu District.
After the first incident, Kanungu Resident District Commissioner Hajji Shafik Ssekandi Sengooba warned that all sand quarries in the district would be closed until appropriate measures were put in place to ensure that no such incident happens again.
“I know this will temporarily inconvenience construction in Kanungu but it’s needed for a short time. We as security we are concerned about lives being lost in a short time,” RDC Dan Rugaju lamented after the closure.
Rugaju said that the district security committee leadership will now embark on educating the population on good sand mining practices before they are allowed to operate again.
He noted that the suspension won’t take too long adding that on Tuesday they will hold a meeting for security, miners, environment officer to assess those quarry and come up with recommendations to guide the District.
