Mr.Sedrack Nzeire, a brother to President Yoweri Museveni, has withdrawn from the race for the position of NRM National Vice Chairman for Western Uganda, barely a week to the polls.
Through his official X handle on Thursday evening, Nzeire announced that he had reached the decision after consultations with the Central Executive Committee (CEC), chaired by President Museveni.
He explained that his withdrawal was aimed at promoting unity and cohesion within the ruling party.
“I have agreed to withdraw my candidature from the race in the spirit of harmonization and unity, so that we remain focused on strengthening and consolidating the NRM,” Nzeire stated.
He added that personal ambition must give way to the collective good of the party and the country.
His move follows pressure from a section of supporters of the Patriotic League of Uganda, who had urged him to step aside in favor of Igara East MP and PLU’s national director for mobilization, Micheal Mawanda, who is also contesting for the seat.
The position, currently held by ICT and National Guidance Minister Chris Baryomunsi, has drawn several contenders including MP Micheal Mawanda, Eng. Jonard Asiimwe Akiiki, and Ibanda District Chairperson Happy Herbert Mayanja, among others.
